Like many of you, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m grateful for the science and technology that made it easier to stay home and still (kind of) do most things I was doing before. But, surprising no one, I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want this to be one more place where we forget to also be grateful for art.<\/p>\n<p>Even in the before times, I thought a lot about the art we took for granted. And a lot of what I read about how people were coping with the pandemic times made it clear how much more crucial art was for better lives. So, here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s to all the art, the creative endeavours, that make life better. Like&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>All the books and poetry and stories and music and TV and movies that are filling your hours, hopefully making things at least easier to tolerate.<\/p>\n<p>All the opera, ballet, plays, concerts of assorted kinds, livestreaming club DJs, and other \u00e2\u20ac\u0153live\u00e2\u20ac\u009d performance, even when it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just streamed online.<\/p>\n<p>All the architecture and interior design that make the places we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re in (or that we see on our walks and drives) nicer to look at and better fits for us.<\/p>\n<p>All the clothing design (yes, a designer was behind even that cheap t-shirt you love) that means I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not doing all this whilst wearing, I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know, a burlap sack or something.<\/p>\n<p>All the photos and paintings and sculpture and other such art, whether it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s on my walls or online.<\/p>\n<p>All the makeup\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand some of you are wildly creative and talented\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthat proves a face can be a great canvas.<\/p>\n<p>The TikTok videos and comedy shows and Tumblr \u00e2\u20ac\u0153cooperative storytelling\u00e2\u20ac\u009d posts that keep the laughs coming.<\/p>\n<p>And also the creativity poured into well-decorated desserts. Or the simple art that is encouraging quotes put on top of a drawing and posted online.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium_large wp-image-1009\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amberbird.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-03-09_pexels-photo-5541019-sm-768x456.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amberbird.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-03-09_pexels-photo-5541019-sm-768x456.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.amberbird.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-03-09_pexels-photo-5541019-sm-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.amberbird.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-03-09_pexels-photo-5541019-sm-1024x608.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.amberbird.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-03-09_pexels-photo-5541019-sm-202x120.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.amberbird.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2021-03-09_pexels-photo-5541019-sm.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And the fan stuff&#8230;the fanfic and fanvids and fan art. I am definitely not one of those snobs who say it has no value.<\/p>\n<p>And the crayon-on-paper masterpieces lovingly made by inexpert hands. Things don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to be marketable to have value and to make life better, even for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>And, yes, the creative endeavours we take part in\u00e2\u20ac\u201deven if we totally suck at them and would never share with others or they seem super minor\u00e2\u20ac\u201dto pass the time, to try a new thing, to get some enjoyment.<\/p>\n<p>Etc etc etc.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, if something is aesthetically pleasing or evoking emotions or distracting you, it might count as art. (Not everything that meets one or more of those criteria is art, but a lot of things are the product of creative work, are art, that people don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t realise.)<\/p>\n<p>So, yes, be grateful you can do video calls and stream things and get vaccinated and so forth (that stuff is awesome!), but don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t forget that science and technology aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the only things making life better.
